Love Your Core!
The patriarchy is lying to you ~ Your core is a good core!
“Lying about the body is a hallmark of patriarchy.”
~ Dr. Jen Gunter
As a full-time yoga, Pilates & fitness instructor, one of the most common things that I hear from my students is, “I need to work on my core.” Even the strongest among them often believe that there is something wrong or lacking with their core. This could not be further from the truth.
Even though we almost all begin life feeling fully at home in our own skin, eventually self-consciousness begins to creep in as society gradually teaches us to relate to our bodies from the outside. This comes at us from all angles: home, family, friends, peers, teachers & the media. So instead of enjoying living in our beautiful, dynamic, unique & imperfect bodies, we begin to give into these beliefs that our bodies are meant to be looked at & judged. We develop a practice of perceiving, monitoring & evaluating ourselves, as well as others. And we hold ourselves to these standards that actively harm us, hurt us & hold us back, causing us to sit out, hide & shrink ourselves (both literally & figuratively).
This is a byproduct of our patriarchal culture in which we learn to view ourselves through a cis-het, male gaze. And through that lens, our bodies are either assets or threats. Our body image becomes something that should be policed, critiqued, criticized, picked apart, improved, fixed & manipulated, instead of appreciated, valued, loved & connected with.
The goal of this workshop is for us to come back home to our bodies as our own. So that every time body-shame comes up, we can stop, breathe, reconnect & remember that we are more than our body. We can dismantle this normalized objectification + patriarchal mindset that causes real harm to ourselves & others across generations.
Join me for core anatomy, strengthening, breathwork, somatic release, movement & community discussion to help us remember or (re)learn that our body is an instrument, not an ornament!
Because when we prioritize how we experience our lives instead of how the world experiences our bodies, we can take back a lot of power & experience a lot more pleasure.
