Root to Rise Up Yoga
In 1977, revolutionary Peter Tosh wrote the song, “Equal Rights.” During his performances, he would often repeat the phrase, “No justice, no peace,” coining the slogan that activists worldwide chant in the streets to this day:
“Everyone is crying out for peace, yes,
None is crying out for justice.
I don't want no peace,
I need equal rights and justice.
Got to get it! Equal rights and justice.
I've got to get it! Equal rights and justice.
I really need it! Equal rights and justice.
Just give me my share! Equal rights and justice.
I'm fighting for it! Equal rights and justice.
Everyone is fighting for equal rights and justice.
Palestine is fighting for equal rights and justice.
Down in Angola. Equal rights and justice.
Down in Botswana. Equal rights and justice.
Down in Zimbabwe. Equal rights and justice.
Down in Rhodesia. Equal rights and justice.
Right here in Jamaica. Equal rights and justice.”
The word Yoga means Union. The ancient practice and tradition of Yoga is an Eight-Limbed Path that is deeply rooted in justice, compassion & liberation. Although there is not often time and space in a studio/gym setting to go into these expansive roots of Yoga, the practice is built on the foundation of the first principle of the First Limb, Ahimsa (non-violence/active compassion) and extends to the Eighth Limb, Samadhi (freedom/liberation/enlightenment).
Yoga has existed for thousands of years & is still relevant today because it is a revolutionary & daring practice. Yoga ignites our passions, prepares us for protest & propels us towards peace. The sovereignty that is Yoga is both personal and political. And these sacred practices have influenced Civil Rights Leaders & activists across the world & through generations.
This 90-minute workshop led by Natalie Clark & Jesika Howard will seek to incorporate the full expanse of Yoga: ethics, morals, oneness, presence, healing, humility, love, peace, social justice & collective empowerment. As a moving meditation, we will flow together through Sun Salutations, as well as other invigorating & energizing Yoga Postures, and then be guided into deep rest, release & recovery. The practice will be equal parts rigorous & restorative, with space to modify for your own body.
