Migration Sensation “Drop-In” at Charleston Slough

Saturday, November 09, 2019

09:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Observation Deck at Charleston Slough

Terminal Boulevard, Mountain View, CA, USA

Observe, enjoy and learn about the hundreds of bird species that visit our wetlands every year. If you haven't spent time by the bay, you are in for a real treat. SCVAS will have docents stationed on the Charleston Slough observation deck overlooking the tidal estuary, identifying birds and discussing their behaviors and adaptations.

The fall migration is under way. In case you have any doubts, the SF Bay Area is a fantastic place to winter according to the tens of thousands of birds who choose to stay September through May. In addition to the estuary’s year-round residents such as Northern Harriers, Turkey Vultures, Snowy and Great Egrets, Marbled Godwits, American Avocets, and Black-necked Stilts, we are likely to encounter newly arrived “snow birds” such as Northern Shovelers, Green-winged Teals, Northern Pintails, and White-crowned and Golden-crowned Sparrows. We will observe them dabble, dive, dine and hobnob with one another. Bring binoculars if you have them. Otherwise, there will be some binoculars available.

In case of rain, this event will be cancelled.

Meet: enter the park at the corner of San Antonio and Terminal and walk about 1/8 mile to the observation deck
