Enjoy a tour of an established native garden in Catonsville.

Andrea’s description of the garden:

I think of my garden as a secret garden because it is behind the house. No one would know from the street how heavily landscaped my yard is. I live in an area called Oak Forest that dates to 1895. Unfortunately, in the 27 years I have been here, I have lost all the oaks and most of the mature trees whether due to age, blight, lightning, stress, and the like. I began with a master plan and over the years kept adding beds. Of course, this was before native gardening became the rage. I’m on board, having added natives to my koi pond, where I had to remove a very large river birch (This is a very interesting story as to why). I’m slowly replacing non-natives with native plants where I can, throughout my garden. I love incorporating garden decor where least expected. I look back at photos of dead oaks and ivy everywhere, the transition over the years and even I can’t believe the oasis I have created. I’m looking forward to sharing it with you!

Bio:

I’m a new MG, class of 2023. However, gardening has always been a passion of mine. Growing up in CT, we had beautiful gardens. The grounds were landscaped with specimen trees and many interesting beds. It was here that I first learned about the importance of color, texture, height, and seasonality, all of which I have incorporated into my current garden. Having recently retired from a career in health care operations, I now have the time to devote to my garden. As my dad would say, this time of year you’ll find me “in the back 40”.

Wild Ones Greater Baltimore 2024 garden tours are generously offered by local residents. While the focus of the tour will be on native plants, all of the gardens will include some non-natives and many will have invasives or other issues the owners are battling. Expect these tours to be an opportunity to enjoy beautiful gardens while learning about the joys and challenges of starting and maintaining a biodiverse ecosystem..

Event address at a private residence will be provided to registrants closer to the event date.
