Join us for an unforgettable field trip to the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles County! It is a living time capsule where kids and adults can explore ice age fossils, ancient ecosystems, and the science of paleontology up close. Students will learn how scientists uncover and identify bones trapped in natural asphalt, discover stories of mammoths, saber-toothed cats, and other prehistoric animals that once roamed Southern California, and see real excavation pits and laboratory work in action. Along the way, you will connect geology and climate history, observe how modern conservation and museum practices preserve fragile fossils, and practice science skills such as observing, questioning, and interpreting evidence. This hands-on experience sparks curiosity about Earth’s past, encourages scientific thinking, and offers memorable opportunities for photos, conversations, and discoveries that bring natural history to life!
Heartland events are designed for families to attend together. Students need to be accompanied by an adult chaperone. If your student will be attending with another family, please email the field trip host to let them know once you complete your registration. Chaperones must be the legal parent or 25 years and older. All chaperones must be healthy, ethical people with the skills to be responsible adult chaperones.
**To ensure the health and safety of all attendees, please do not attend a field trip or event if you, your student(s), or anyone in your household is ill or showing possible signs of illness.**
