Buckle up as we go on an adventure to explore the deep and vast history of the United States! In the fall, students will study the American Indians, the colonial period, the regions and economies of the 13 colonies, memorize the 50 states and their capitals, and learn about our national symbols, landmarks, and figures. We will read The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare. In the spring, students will study the American Revolution, Westward Expansion, the Articles of Confederation, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. We will revisit memorizing the 50 states and their capitals and continue learning about our national symbols, landmarks, and figures. We will read Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes. Live sessions will be engaging and interactive, including slides, videos, games like Kahoot!, note-taking skills, drawing, read-alouds, and even show and tell. Students will build confidence as they learn online, make friends, and have FUN! This year-long course will meet the California state standards for fifth-grade Social Studies.
