BAY RIDGE / Patchwork Quilt: Healing Through Storytelling and Art Making
Sunday, July 09, 2023
02:00 PM - 04:00 PM
Underland Gallery
457 77th St, Brooklyn, NY 11209, USA
Join us for an afternoon of family-friendly, multi-sensory storytelling by the Bay Ridge community!
Listen to a personal story of growth and healing from Mohammed Shalodi, co-founder of Palestinian dance ensemble Freedom Dabka. Watch the short film "Coming Home" (2022), which features Freedom Dabka and the ways that their traditional dance and chant connect them to community and homeland.
Share your own stories of growth and healing, then craft personal quilt squares to express them. Free refreshments will be served.
Squares created at 8 events across Brooklyn will be stitched into a borough-wide community quilt by master quilter Sylvia Hernandez. The quilt will be unveiled at Brooklyn FAM’s flagship festival at the Prospect Park Boathouse on October 22, 2023, and publicly exhibited at the Brooklyn Children's Museum.
This free community event is made possible by partnerships with AAANY, AAFSCNY, and Underland Gallery and funding from CitizensNYC and YAMA. Thank you!
