InalettertoHaydendated27October1871,JayCooke’spublicitymanstatesthatCongressshould’passabillreservingtheGreatGeyserBasinasapublicparkforeverjustasithasreservedthatfarinferiorwondertheYosemiteValleyandthebigtrees.ThisproposalcamefromJudgeWilliamDarrahKelley,aRepublicancongressmanfromPennsylvaniaandbusinessassociateofCooke.Sheridanhavebothtelegraphedthatthereportwillbeasplendidonefromtheexpeditionatthisend.HaydeninhisreporttoCongressthattheGeyserregionaroundYellowstoneLakeshallbesetapartbygovernmentaspark,similartothatoftheGreatTrees&otherreservationsinCalifornia.Wouldthisconflictwithourlandgrant,orinterferewithusinanyway?Pleasegivemeyourviewsonthissubject.Itisimportanttodosomethingspeedily,orsquattersandclaimantswillgointhere,andwecanprobablydealmuchbetterwiththegovernmentinanyimprovementswemaydesiretomakeforthebenefitofourpleasuretravelthanwithindividuals.’YourOctoberthirtiethandNovembersixthrec’d.WedonotwanttoseetheFallsoftheYellowstonedrivingtheloomsofacottonfactory,orthegreatgeysersboilingporkforsomegiganticpackinghouse,butinallthenativemajestyandgrandeurinwhichtheyappeartoday,without,asyet,asingletraceofthatadornmentwhichisdesecration,thatimprovementwhichisequivalenttoruin,orthatutilizationwhichmeansutterdestruction.Theireffortsonbehalfoftheparkwereimmediatelysuccessful.Itislittlewonderthatthebillpassedquicklywithonlytokenopposition.Similarly,theprofitmotiveforrailroadsemergedintheestablishmentofotherearlynationalparksinthenineteenthcentury.Theywereprofitmotivated,buttheiractionsresultedinthepreservationofcornerstonesinournationalparksystem.Thesewerethe’amenities’providedbyearlyduderanchentrepreneurs.WhethertheywerenativeWesternerswhohadstartedascattleandhorseranchers,oreastern’dudes’whoreturnedtotheWesttoliveforeverthelifetheyhadfirstexperiencedasguestsonsomeoneelse’sranch,theybroughtwiththemtheirownuniqueinterests,attitudes,andbackground.Astheydevelopedtheirholdings,eachranchbegantoreflectthespecialpersonalityofitsowners.Thedudescametorecognizethesedifferencesandselectedtheir’own’ranchaccordingly.Aftermanytrekswest,Howard,theeldest,headedfortheDakotaBadlandstostartacattleranch,andhisbrotherssoonfollowed.Thespreadtheyacquiredbysquatter’srightsbecameknownastheCusterTrailRanch.Inadditiontobeingasuccessfulcattleandhorseoperationinthelate1870s,theranchwasaplacefortheEatons’friendsfromtheEasttoenjoyranchlife.Astheirguestlistgrewbeyondtheirimmediatecircleoffriends,theybeganchargingfortheservicesoftheranch.In1879,theEatonsmovedtheircattleandduderanchingoperationtotheBigHornMountainsinWyomingbecausethesettingprovidedmoresceneryandopportunitiesforrecreation.Otherswerealsocapitalizingonthemarketforranchlifeandpreservingtheassociatedamenityvalues.TheadventuresomeearlsettlednearEstesPark,Colorado,forthepurposeofestablishingacattleoperation.’’Herbagewasplentiful,andcattlecouldfeedallwinter,forthesnowneverlay.From1874to1880,theearlacquired8,200acresofland.Hiseffortstoacquiretheentire20,000acresofEstesParkwereeventuallystymied,however,byotherentrepreneurswhowantedtocapitalizeontheduderanchingpotentialofthearea.Withelkhuntingandtroutfishing,pluscattleranching,theearl’spropertyofferedguestsagrandspectacleoftheAmericanWest.’’Ahundredpeoplelivingatalodgecreatelessconfusion,lessmussandfuss,thanahundredcampingout.’Inremovingthehistoricbuildings,theNationalParkServicehaslostapartofthecowboyculture,butatleastmuchofthenaturalenvironmentpreservedbytheduderanchingentrepreneursremainsintact.AForestRetreatJustastheinfluenceoftheiron,copper,andlumberboomswasfadingintheGreatLakestates,AmericansintheUpperMidwestandNortheastwereretreatingtothewoodsfortheirsummervacations.EntrepreneursinnorthernMichiganrespondedbycreatinghuntingandfishingcampsandlandclubsthatprovidedtheopportunitiesandfacilitiesthatvacationingvisitorssought.Theprocesspreservedaveryextraordinaryplace.Inthemiddleofthenineteenthcentury,Michigan’sUpperPeninsulawasameccaforloggersandminers.In1862over100,000tonsoforepassedthroughtheSaultSte.MarieCanalthatlinkedLakesSuperiorandHuron,andthenextyear,thatamountalmosttripled.LumberjacksalsowerescouringMichigan’slowerpeninsulasearchingforanalternativetoNewEngland’ssaggingtimberproduction.Whentimbersuppliesinthelowerpeninsuladwindled,thoseloggersmovedtotheUpperPeninsula.4Asvirginforestsbecamescarcerinthe1880s,recreationistsfromtheindustrializedcentersoftheUpperMidwestandNortheastwerediscoveringthebeautyoftheHuronMountainregion,locatednearthemouthofthePineRiverontheLakeSuperiorsideoftheUpperPeninsula.AndtheywerenotjustfromMichigan,butfromalloverthegreaterindustrialNortheast.InthewordsofonevisitingsportsmanfromPittsburgh,’Gamewasabundantdeer,wildpigeons,andgrouse.PigeonsfedingreatnumbersonthehuckleberriesinthewoodsbetweenthemouthoftheriverandPineLake.Theforestwaspracticallyuntouched.Longyear,aprosperouslanddealer,withtheidea.LongyearinitiallyrejectedSeymour’sidea,believingthattheareawastooremoteandruggedtodrawtourists.Hedidallow,however,thathewouldjoinSeymourintheventureifSeymourcouldinterestotherprominentpeople.WhenSeymourapproachedLongyearagainin1889,hehadamuchstrongercaseforalandclubintheHuronMountainarea.SeymourhadfoundprominentindividualsfrombothDetroitandMarquettewillingtobecomeclubmembers.Inaddition,huntingandfishingcampsandlandclubswerespringingup’likeflowers’alongtheLakeSuperiorcoastnearSaultSte.Marie,andtheywerespreadingwesttowardtheHuronarea.NodoubtLongyear’senthusiasmwasenhancedbyhisownershipofthesteamboatcompanythatprovidedexclusiveservicetotheareafromthelowerpeninsulaandhisownershipofseveralparcelsoflandnearwhatwouldbetheclub’sboundaries.Needlesstosay,hejoinedSeymourandtheothersintheventure.Theclub’sinitialemphasiswasonenhancinghuntingandfishingopportunitiesandonimprovingfacilitiesforhuntersandanglers.Additionalstaffwashired,andaworkshop,bathhouses,andboathouseswerebuiltontheproperty.Clubemployeesconstructedhikingtrailsandevenbuiltseveralfishhatcheriestoensurethatitslakesandstreamshadamplesuppliesoffish.Tocreateacommunityatmosphereandastrongerincentivetostaywiththeclubthroughtheyears,theboardruledthatclubmemberscouldbuildcabinsontheproperty,leasingsitesfromtheclubfor$1peryear.
