Push-ups are Political

The worst ClassPass review that I ever received said, “She played these like social justice type songs that genuinely were so weird to workout to and also how are you going to make a workout class political? Like we need to hear about systematic reform while doing push-ups?”

Well, Becky, thanks for the feedback because from this review, Push-ups are Political was born!

More than just a workout class, this unique offering combines storytelling, music, fitness, discussion, community building & social justice for an engaging, memorable & motivational workout experience. Transforming conventional fitness goals into inspiring & encouraging stories that we can relate to, connect with, learn from & carry with us long after class is over.

Yes, fitness is fun, exercise is healthy, working out with friends is a form of socializing & it feels good to feel good in our bodies.

AND being strong & physically fit is important to protect ourselves as women and queer folks across the gender spectrum from being assaulted, abused, attacked, violated, stalked, harassed, raped, kidnapped, trafficked, preyed on, disappeared, deported & unalived. Through movement, fitness & solidarity, we can take back our autonomy, agency, confidence & power by refusing to shrink into subordination.

There are some things that we have very little control over right now in terms of our government, but we DO have control over how we care for ourselves and how we show up for one another.

By building strength + resilience in our bodies, minds & communities, we are combating centuries of racist, patriarchal, heteronormative & white supremacist values that were created to keep women, femmes & gender expansive folks small, frail & vulnerable.

I’ve created this special movement practice for women, thems & femmes (WTFs) because, for us, working out is inherently political, defiant & rebellious. In order to be a part of the resistance, we must be big, bold, loud, strong, united, ungovernable & unfuckwithable!
