La Brea Tar Pits-Heartland Charter School

“Visit the only Ice Age fossil site in the world that’s being actively excavated in the middle of a city!”

This will be a self-guided field trip around the La Brea Tar Pits museum and grounds. The fossils on display at the museum have all been excavated from the tar pits and range from mammoths to sloths to microfossils. Outside the museum is the Lake pit as well as other sites that are being excavated. Come join us to learn more about what life was like in Ice Age Los Angeles.

Heartland events are designed for families to attend together. Students need to be accompanied by an adult chaperone. If your student will be attending with another family, please email the field trip host to let them know once you complete your registration. Chaperones must be the legal parent or 25 years and older. All chaperones must be healthy, ethical people with the skills to be responsible adult chaperones.

What are the check-in procedures? Meet me at the Museum Entrance to check-in at 9:15. We will enter the museum as a group at 9:30. I will be wearing a Heartland T-shirt.

Does this trip have any height, weight, and/or age restrictions? All ages are welcome. Maximum of two chaperones per family due to limited space. Each person who attends a field trip or event must be registered through Ticketbud.

Is there on-site parking available? The museum's parking lot is located at the corner of Curson Avenue and 6th Street, directly behind the museum. Payment for this lot is $18 per vehicle (out of pocket) and can be made with credit card only. Enter from the western side of Curson Avenue. There is also metered street parking and other parking lots near the museum. If you choose street parking, please read all parking signs carefully, as restrictions apply. Most importantly, do not park along Wilshire Boulevard between the hours of 7 and 9 am and 4 and 7 pm (Monday–Friday), or your car will be ticketed and towed. This applies even if you are parked at a meter.

Can we pack snacks or lunch for this event or field trip? There is no food or drink allowed inside the museum. There are areas outside where you can enjoy a picnic or explore the many restaurants and eateries on Wilshire Blvd.
