Umfundalai with Leanna

Join Leanna for free community dance classes in Umfundalai, a contemporary African dance technique, which means "essence" or "essential" in Kiswahili. Open to ages 5+ and all levels with in-person and virtual options. For in-person attendance at Threads Dance Nexus, limited spots are available and masks are required.

Classes will be from 11 am - 12:15 pm CT on the following dates: July 16th, July 30th, August 13th, August 27th, September 10th, September 24th, October 8th, October 22nd, November 5th, and November 26th. Preregistration is required and will close an hour before the class starts.

Threads Dance Nexus is located at 2213 Snelling Ave Ste #100, Minneapolis, MN 55404. There is free parking in the parking lot and free street parking nearby. It is also a 5 minute walk from the Franklin Ave Light Rail Station and a 2-5 minute walk from the nearest bus stops (lines 2, 9, 22, and 67).

For attire, participants can wear a lapa (a piece of fabric or cloth worn as a wrap around the hips that covers the lap) or shokotoes (loose fitting pants that allow for freedom of movement). In addition, Umfundalai is typically done barefoot.
