SCVAS Class: Get Started Birding in Santa Clara Valley

Thursday May 16th 2019 7:00 pm –  9:00 pm

Note: This is a 2-part class. The first class will take place at McClellan Ranch Preserve in Cupertino on Thursday, May 16 from 7:00-9:00PM, and the second part will take place at the Eastside parking lot of Almaden Lake Park (5949 Winfield, San Jose) on Saturday, May 18 from 8:00-11:00AM.

Are you curious about identifying and observing birds here in the Bay Area? Dig into your local environment with this introductory class and associated field trip. In our evening class, we'll cover birding basics - families of common birds, their habitats, how to tell them apart, and how to use binoculars. You’ll learn where to find birds in different seasons and tides, and then practice what we learned in a weekend field trip.

Past students have said: "It got me thinking about the 4 steps to ID a bird and also how to use a field guide." "The topics covered in class were very helpful - ethics, etiquette, and steps to ID birds. I feel comfortable joining any field trip offered, even if others are more experienced. See you on another field trip!"

Instructor Mary Wisnewski started birding just over twenty years ago after taking a class just like this one. She has long been a fan of SCVAS field trips, which introduced her to many of her favorite birding destinations in California. Recently, Mary has been taking field biology courses at West Valley College.
