Black Fiddlers of Monticello Walking Tour
Saturday, April 10, 2021
02:00 PM - 03:00 PM
Maplewood Cemetery, Charlottesville, VA, USA
At last, after months of waiting, Early Music Access Project offers a unique in-person experience! Based on his research as a 2020 Fellow of the International Center for Jefferson Studies, David McCormick leads a tour of downtown Charlottesville that illuminates the lives of the Scott and Hemings family fiddlers with stops at the Maplewood Cemetery, the one-time sites of the Scott and Hemings family homes on Main Street, and a few other important landmarks like the Levy Opera House. McCormick caps off each tour with a short outdoor performance of fiddle tunes associated with the Scott and Hemings families.
The tour starts and ends at Maplewood Cemetery in downtown Charlottesville. Free on-street parking is plentiful on weekends. The Scott family gravesite that begins the tour is near the Maple Street entrance.
PLEASE NOTE: The tour is entirely outdoors and requires up to a mile of walking on grassy terrain, sidewalks, and across roadways.
In the event of cancelation due to inclement weather, participants may attend the rain date for their tour, Sunday April 11 at 2pm. If the rain date is canceled due to inclement weather, participants will be contacted with the option to convert their ticket sale into a donation, reschedule their tour, or be issued a refund. Inclement weather cancelation will be announced via email no later than one hour before each tour.
COVID-19 PRECAUTIONS: Your safety is important to us! Early Music Access Project follows all federal, state, and local guidelines and is limiting tour size accordingly.
