Brooklyn Public Library - Cortelyou Branch, Argyle Road, Brooklyn, NY, USA
Calling all Brooklyn high school juniors and seniors! Come out for an afternoon of conversation, delicious free food from local restaurants Cedar Star and Purple Yam, and a moving public art project with Flatbush-based multidisciplinary artist Magalí Wilensky.
Share about the hurdles and joys of your final years of high school and make your mark on a public art piece to inspire the next generation. Reflect on the extraordinary challenges of the pandemic, the highs and lows of high school (pandemic or no pandemic!), some experiences you might have had with discrimination both individually and collectively, lessons learned, and wisdom to share.
Artist Magalí will lead us in a grounding sound bath to release stress and deepen self-awareness and reflection. Then, together we will use textiles, drawings, and words to express our stories and insights on a beautiful public art piece in the shape of a tree and its roots. The piece will symbolize where we have come from, where we are going, and how we have grown.
Make Your Mark, Brooklyn Youth! will be unveiled at Brooklyn FAM's annual flagship festival on Sunday, October 22, 2023, at the Prospect Park Boathouse and exhibited at the Brooklyn Children's Museum, schools, and libraries to inspire Brooklyn's next generation.
This event is sponsored by the Mayor's Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes and the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York (JCRC). It is designed and produced by Brooklyn nonprofit leaders in JCRC's 2023 We Are All Brooklyn Fellowship Against Hate.
