This protected eucalyptus grove is known for its migration and population of Monarch butterflies from Thanksgiving to Valentine's Day. Students will learn about the butterfly migration and walk 1/3 mile trail to the beach where they will see the location of the only naval attack by a Japanese submarine on the California coast during WWII.

Educational activities include informal discussion by HST tour guide about the life cycle of the monarch butterfly, the migration of monarch butterflies, the Ellwood Sperling Open Space Preserve, Venoco oil platforms and natural oil seepage, World War II bombing of Pearl Harbor and Santa Barbara, the West Coast invasion scare and Japanese-American internment as the group makes their way on about a half mile round trip walk on pretty flat terrain with a small hill.

Heartland events are designed for families to attend together. Students need to be accompanied by an adult chaperone. If your student will be attending with another family, please email the field trip host to let them know once you complete your registration. Chaperones must be the legal parent or 25 years and older. All chaperones must be healthy, ethical people with the skills to be responsible adult chaperones.

What are the check-in procedures? Check in a 10am at the Ellwood Open Space and Sperling Preserve Parking area at 7729 Hollister across from Ellwood Elementary School. Jenna Hayden will be wearing a name tag. Parking is free.

Does this trip have any height, weight, and/or age restrictions? All ages are welcome. Each person who attends a field trip or event must be registered through Ticketbud.

Is there on-site parking available? Yes, free parking is available.
