Santa Barbara Maritime Museum

113 Harbor Way ste 190, Santa Barbara, CA 93109, USA

Registration window January 13, 10:00 a.m. -January 20, 7:00 p.m.

This is a 2 hour trip aboard a local commercial sportfishing vessel, exploring the Santa Barbara Channel and engaging students as citizen scientists. Students will work with their team of educators in small groups of lab rotations that include sampling water quality, observing marine invertebrates, studying plankton, and learning about oceanic food webs.

-For safety students MUST wear closed-toe sneakers/tennis shoes, long pants strongly recommended, and dress in layers –It is always cooler out on the boat and in the Santa Barbara Channel and you could get wet

-Motion sickness medications, if susceptible, must be taken prior to arrival

-Classes will not be rescheduled if the weather is bad and the boat is unable to go out- labs will be conducted dock-side rain or shine

-Lifejackets are not required per US Coast Guard regulations of a licensed/inspected commercial vessel. If any parent/student does want to wear a life vest, they are available (no charge) at the adjacent SB Landing office (and of course the boat has onboard emergency lifesaving equipment/jackets for all in case needed).

Ticket cost:

  • Students grades 3-12 $21.50
  • Chaperones $21.50

*The price for tickets paid with a credit card will be slightly higher due to the Ticketbud processing fee.

Heartland events are designed for families to attend together. Students need to be accompanied by an adult chaperone. Refunds will not be given for any reason. As a courtesy, if you are sick or unable to attend a field trip, please contact the teacher, who planned the event to let them know so they do not wait at the venue for you.* Families who are no-shows may lose access to future field trips.*
