Heralding from a sold-out final concert from 2017, Friends of Music Series return in 2018 with a stellar lineup of top Melbourne emerging musicians, boasting from a variety of styles ranging from classical, folk to contemporary performances.
July concert showcases the following programs:
2pm, Favourite Encores and Melodies (Mark Shiell, flute)
3.30pm, Curtis Reardon (Guitar)

About the Artists
Mark Shiell (flute)
Mark Shiell grew up on a farm in Western Victoria.
Flat paddocks to the horizon, dry daytime heat, cool quiet nights.
A great place for a young musician to dream.  Mark’s began his musical journey as a flautist.  In the early 1990’s he studied at the VCA and won many awards including the Gwen Nisbett Award and the Clarke Scholarship.  Before conducting took his focus Mark played as soloist, chamber musician and orchestral musician around Australia and Asia.
Over the last two decades his commitment to regular conducting roles has accounted for the majority of his musical life. Guest conducting has included the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Canberra Symphony, St. Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra, Moscow Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa, Victorian Opera and Sydney Sinfonia.
At the end of 2016 Mark began a new journey with the flute.  Over the course of 2017 this journey grew with recital and concerto performances.  He is now embracing the flute once again as his main musical passion.  Seeking to combine meditation and music and returning after so long Mark feels that playing the flute is filled with the magic it had when he was a boy on a farm in the Wimmera.

Curtis Reardon (Guitar)
2018 FOMS is excited to work with Collaboration Connection, whom presents Curtis Reardon as one of our September artists.

Curtis Reardon is a guitarist and composer based in Melbourne. Curtis is a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts, where he was awarded the Marion Thomas Scholarship and received the Allan Zavod Jazz Fusion Composition Award. Since graduating, he has been involved in a variety of projects as an arranger, session musician, and composer. As a guitarist Curtis explores the harmonic possibilities of the instrument whilst maintaining a melodic voice and draws on a knowledge of jazz and classical music to add colour to his music.
