Creating stories can be a very solitary sport. If you’re spending hours at a time staring at a screen, holding a pencil, or sitting at a desk, it’s time to get moving — both in the physical and inspirational sense!
Unplug and meet up with your fellow writers and illustrators for a day of wellness. Workshops will include:

Faculty Bios:
Caryna Wong
Caryna came to yoga by accident. After having sustained a neck injury from a car accident, a friend took her to a Bikram yoga class which unlocked her neck and gave her back full range of motion. Since then, she has studied various types of yoga in order to understand how the practice can help heal the body and use it efficiently to prevent future injury. She has also worked with Dr Loren Fishman for the past 7 years treating his patients for their Back and Neck Injuries, Scoliosis, Osteoporosis, Rotator Cuff Injuries, Arthritis, and other issues. Having worked in the IT industry for 15 years, Caryna brings a systematic and analytical approach to her work which is helpful in understanding the physical issues that clients have as well as adapting movements for people who are limited in their abilities. Her main interest is in constantly learning new methods to help people manage and overcome their physical issues.
Jodi Kendall
JODI KENDALL’S debut middle grade novel THE UNLIKELY STORY OF A PIG IN THE CITY published in 2017 with HarperCollins Children’s Books, the publishers of Charlotte’s Web. ALA Booklist called the book “heartwarming and satisfying” and the Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books reviewed it as “a compelling story that will appeal to the animal fans who loved The One and Only Ivan.” Jodi‘s newest novel, DOG DAYS IN THE CITY, published in October 2018, and is the sequel to her first book. Both of Jodi’s middle grade novels are available in English in the USA/Canada, and THE UNLIKELY STORY OF A PIG IN THE CITY will be translated into Simplified Chinese and published in China in 2020.
Jodi is a highly sought-after speaker at librarian, school, and bookstore events around the United States. As a former freelance wildlife journalist, with past clients including Nat Geo Wild and the National Geographic Channel, she traveled around the world studying animals in their natural habitats and in zoos and aquariums. Jodi has contributed digital content for many popular television shows, including Alpha Dogs, Inside Combat Rescue, Are You Tougher Than A Boy Scout?, The 80’s: The Decade that Made Us and Untamed Americas. Notable achievements include writing content for the National Geographic Channel’s Locked Up Abroad series iPad/iPhone app for three seasons and the Nat Geo Wild’s Big Cat Week iPad app, and the publication of an article, Researching Wild Whale Sharks on the Webby Award-nominated Great Migrations website.
Jodi currently lives in New York City, where she continues to write books and is active with several animal rescue non-profits. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Arizona and is an active PAL (Published & Listed) member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrator’s (SCBWI). Laurie Calkhoven
Laurie Calkhoven is the author of more than 50 books for young readers ranging from award-winning nonfiction early readers to YA adaptations of adult books. She has written six novels for American Girl as well as her own middle grade historical series, BOYS OF WARTIME, along with many nonfiction tittles. Laurie uses meditation at every stage of her writing process from brainstorming story ideas and getting to know her characters to conjuring scenes and revising her work. Prior to becoming a full-time writer, Laurie spent 20 years working in book publishing, most recently as Executive Editor for the Scholastic Book Clubs. Visit her online at www.lauriecalkhoven.com.
