Political and Social Turmoil in the Fourteenth Century, and the Very Strange Music That Accompanied.
The 14th c. was the period of the Ars Nova, a new style of music made possible by controversial advances in notation. From the Roman de Fauvel, an musical allegorical tale of moral decay and power & influence run amok, to the some of the most rhythmically complex and extreme music ever composed before the 20th century, the Middle Ages grudgingly gave way to the Renaissance in a century of war, plague, social upheaval, climate instability, and spiritual crisis.
