About the Artists
Yiyun Gu (piano)
Chinese-born Australian pianist Yiyun Gu appears on stage frequently as a soloist and chamber musician.
Yiyun started her piano training at the age of 3, and made her first appearance of playing concerto with orchestra at the age of 12. She won prizes at several youth piano competitions when she was in Shanghai. After completed two degrees in economics (Shanghai Jiao Tong University) and commerce (University of Melbourne), Yiyun decided to devote herself to music performance and teaching, with the passion for sharing her love of music with audiences and students.
Yiyun completed her Master of Music at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music with Stephen McIntyre AM in 2013. She traveled to UK and Italy to participate in music festivals and study master classes with many world-renowned musicians. She was the recipient of the 3rd prize in the 2015 ASKM Gold Coast Open Piano Competition, and the Finalist Awards in 2012 and 2014 Australian National Piano Award.  In Australia, Yiyun performed in Melbourne Town Hall and Governmen House Victoria, and for 2017 Port Fairy Spring Music Festival, 2016 Brunswick Beethoven Festival, 2013 ‘3MBS’ Beethoven Marathon at Federation Square, Music Lovers’ Society of Victoria, Allen House Concert Series at Ormond College, etc.

Gemma Tully & The Thornbirds (voice, acoustic & electric guitars, double bass)
2018 FOMS is excited to work with Collaboration Connection, whom presents Gemma Tully & The Thornbirds as one of our October artists.

Folk-jazz-chamber ensemble Gemma Tully & The Thornbirds play contemporary original music. Luscious vocal harmonies, guitar and double bass combine to create a truly fresh and unique sound. The music moves fluidly between song form and improvisation, as well-crafted melodies illuminate charming lyrics. GT & The Thornbirds features four of Melbourne’s most generous spirited improvising musicians: Max West (electric and acoustic guitars), Daniel Beinke (double bass), Bianca Kyriacou (voice), and Gemma Tully (voice). Years of
friendship have cultivated a sense of sensitivity and compassion between the musicians as they playfully interpret and re-interpret Gemma’s songs.
