From Freezing Winter to Midnight Sun

Reflecting the Enlightenment philosophy of seeking truth through a new source of individual reason, Haydn rejected compositional devices that had been used in the Renaissance and Baroque eras in favor of new inventions that would lay the foundations for the “Classical” period of music. Likewise, Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo uses non-traditional titles and ideas for the movements of his Mass in order to evoke a metaphysical journey from heaven to earth.
