The new students we will encounter and the employees we will be looking to hire all have one thing in common. They are coming from a diverse background. If we are going to succeed as leaders, and professionals, we need the tools to support and retain these individuals. Using Val's hit book, The Only Black Girl in the Room as the basis of the curriculum, Val creates a safe space to learn how to talk about difficult topics like race, implicit bias, sexism, and gender identity. Through a series of lectures, activities, and discussions, participants will leave with a toolkit on how to navigate these conversations, how to lead these discussions and how to adopt equitable practices in their space. We've all been caught off guard when certain comments are made. When do we say something? When can we say something? And more importantly, when we speak, how can we ensure we are heard?

Schedule for Workshop

10AM Introductions & Key Terms: Power, privilege, oppression, colonizer, racist, prejudice, marginalized, "only," diversity, equity, inclusion, patriarchy, ally person-first language, what do they all mean?!?!

10:30AM When Was the First time you were an "only?": Was it in school? What can Educators do to prevent this isolation? Was it at work? What can Employers do? What can Co-workers do?

11AM A Brief History of Surviving as a Marginalized Group Member: When we say marginalized what do we mean? What are some disadvantages that we face? What do we have control over?

11:30AM Privilege Activity

12:00PM When Do I Have Privilege? How Can I Use My Privilege? What does privilege look like? What is the difference between privilege and hard work?

12:30PM Microaggressions & What to Say Instead:It doesn't matter if it was a joke, or your intention was to provide support, if someone leaves the interaction feeling offended or unsafe clearly your intention was not aligned with your impact, now what? Perhaps you are singled out at work because of you identify. You want to say something but you're worried about your position, what are your next steps?

1-2PM LUNCH (off-campus)

2PM Implicit Biases & White Fragility: We all have biases, some we are aware of while others just seem natural. We've never examined them before. What's the harm in stereotypes and assumptions and why does it seem like white people seem more surprised by this than people of color? Well, that phenomenon actually has a name, "White Fragility."

3PM Why We Have to Say Black Lives Matter: These words make a lot of people uncomfortable, at the very least they instigate some sort of feeling, let's unpack this. Let's discuss why these words are so important, especially at this moment.

3:30PM Hate Runs Deep Even from Ourselves: Something that makes racism so hardwired is that it forces, even those oppressed by it, us to believe. It will make us hate ourselves if we let it. This is seen in the lack of representation in the media, history books, and standards of beauty.

4:00PM Intersectionality: How does our identity and its multiple layers, (some that we can hide while others are in the forefront), effect our communication and our opportunities?

4:45PM-5PM Closing thoughts, how can we do better?: Whether we identify as marginalized group members or as an ally, what can we do in our little space in the world to create a more inclusive environment? Is it the way that we talk? The way that we engage on social media? The readings we assign to students? For employers, is it where we advertise job postings?

If you would liked to get your copy of The Only Black Girl in the Room prior to the workshop it is available here.
