SUNSET PARK / Patchwork Quilt: Healing Through Storytelling and Art Making

This FREE community event is your space, Sunset Park fam, to listen, share, connect, and create!

Join us inside the park at 44th St and 5th Ave to exchange stories of growth and healing, and create a personal quilt square to express your story through words, drawings, and beautiful fabrics. To open and close the event, Rueda de Oro and ChiWiggly will offer very special community arts experiences: join a Colombian rueda drumming circle at 2 p.m. and explore new, expressive movement with ChiWen at 4:30 p.m.!

After the event, squares crafted by folks at 8 events across the borough (Brooklyn Borough Hall, Flatbush, Bushwick, Fort Greene, Brownsville, Sunset Park, Bay Ridge, and Crown Heights) will be stitched together in a community quilt by Williamsburg-based master quilter Sylvia Hernandez. The quilt will take the form of the borough of Brooklyn with an overlay of a tree and its roots, to symbolize the diversity of our individual voices and the strength of our interconnectedness and mutuality.

The finished quilt will be unveiled on October 22 at Brooklyn FAM 2023, our 3rd annual flagship festival at the Prospect Park Boathouse. Follow us on social media for details.

¡Este evento comunitario GRATUITO es su espacio, Sunset Park, para escuchar, compartir,  conectar y crear!

 Únase a nosotros en el parque en la 44th St y 5th Ave para intercambiar historias de crecimiento y curación y para crear un pedazo de colcha que exprese su historia a través de palabras, dibujos y hermosos tejidos.  Durante la apertura y cierre del evento, Rueda de Oro y ChiWiggly ofrecerán experiencias artísticas comunitarias muy especiales: únase al  círculo de   rueda de Bullerengue Colombiana a las 14h ¡y aprenda movimientos nuevos y expresivos con ChiWen a las 16h30 !

Después del evento, los  pedazos creados por las personas participantes en los 8 diferente eventos en todo el  estado (Brooklyn Borough Hall, Flatbush, Bushwick, Fort Greene, Brownsville, Sunset Park, Bay Ridge, y Crown Heights) serán unidos y cosidos en una colcha comunitaria por Sylvia Hernandez, maestra en quilts. La colcha tomará la forma del  barrio de Brooklyn con una superposición de un árbol y sus raíces, para simbolizar la diversidad de nuestras voces individuales y la fuerza de nuestra interconexión y reciprocidad. La colcha será expuesta el 22 de octubre en Brooklyn FAM 2023, nuestro tercer festival anual en Prospect Park Boathouse, y luego en el Brooklyn Children’s Museum. ¡Síguenos en las redes sociales para más detalles!
