SCVAS Field Trip: Alum Rock Park (optional Alviso extension)

Directions: From Hwy 101 or I-680 take McKee Rd northeast toward hills then left on Toyon Ave, right on Penitencia Creek Rd, and continue into park. Pass under bridge and meet at far end of Rustic Lands parking lot (free).

Highlights: Variety of habitats, including chaparral, riparian, mixed forests, grassland, and rocky terrain. We will look for Great Horned Owl, Hermit Thrush, Rufous-crowned Sparrow, California Thrasher, Acorn Woodpeckers, raptors, and more. This trip will be followed by an optional extension to the Environmental Education Center in Alviso where Hooded Oriole is possible, plus White-tailed Kite, Black-necked Stilt, American White Pelicans, American Avocet and a variety of shorebirds.

Difficulty: Moderately strenuous 3-mile walk; Alviso is flat, easy walking on graded dirt and boardwalk.

Notes: Heavy rain cancels, kids ages 14+ are welcome (no unaccompanied minors)
