SCVAS Field Trip: Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve

Directions: From I-280 in Cupertino take Foothill Blvd south 3.3 miles (becomes Stevens Canyon Rd). Turn right on Monte Bello Rd, go about a mile, and turn left past winery entrance into preserve parking lot.

Highlights: Join us for a pleasant walk to the ephemeral pond and surrounding forest and hillsides of Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve to see birds and enjoy nature. If the pond is full, we may see some waterbirds and possibly Rough-skinned Newts. Expect woodpeckers, flycatchers, warblers, towhees and other forest and chaparral birds. We’ll try for California Thrasher, Wrentit, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Spotted Towhee, Orange-crowned Warbler, Warbling Vireo and others.

Difficulty: 2 miles, dirt trails, some hills

Notes: Free parking, good restrooms.

For all trips: Beginners welcome. Heavy rain cancels. Carpool if possible. Bring binoculars. No unaccompanied minors.
