Evaluating Horse Saddle & Rider as a Combination

Saturday, September 14, 2019 - Sunday, September 15, 2019

09:30 AM - 04:00 PM

Melton Mowbray

Melton Mowbray, UK

There is a lot that the equine therapist, coach or saddle fitter can do to help clients improve professional input, armed with a few simple postural evaluation tools for the horse and rider, together with a simple saddle fit check. This is a unique horse-saddle-rider lecture combination presentation with Caroline Lindsay, Veterinary Physiotherapist, graduate Sports Therapist and qualified Saddle Fitter. The aim is to enhance the therapist's or saddle fitter's confidence in making assessments of the horse-saddle-rider combination as one unit, rather than only focusing on a single component of that combination.

Full ticket price is £150 for the two days (12 hours) CPD. The advance payment of £35 represents a deposit (plus a £2.72 booking fee). Balance of £115 to be paid on the day before the start of the presentation at registration (opens 9.00am). Free tea, coffee and snacks all day - including a sandwich wrap lunch which attendees can make themselves from a selection of fillings.

There will be a lecture to start the session, then the group will get practice tests and getting their eye in with the various techniques. We will then put that into practice with several horse-saddle-rider combinations.

The session will focus on evaluating all three components of the horse saddle rider combination. Compensatory gait in both horse and rider will be covered. Comprehensive saddle fit checking, rider postural evaluation and a special focus on how those three components impact on one another will be looked at in detail. The rider will be evaluated off the horse as well as on. The application of the neutral pelvis concept in equitation will be also be covered - what it is, why it is important, how it is achieved, which muscles it reflexively activates and deactivates, how the asymmetrical rider affects the horse and what the impact of neutral is on the horse. Caroline believes she has also found the neutral pelvis position in the horse so that will also be demonstrated.

During the session we will explore what can be done to improve the various combinations. Rider exercise prescription and the importance of equitation specific activities for fitness and conditioning will be covered.

The aim of the event is to provide attendees with a selection of useful recognition, evaluation and correctional techniques to address the horse-saddle-rider as a combination whatever the role they play as an equine paraprofessional.
