TEDxDurhamSalon: The Adulteration of Sports

Cartier Lounge (formerly Uptown Bar and Lounge)

Tuesday August 21st 2018 7:00 pm –  9:00 pm

We like our sports to be untainted--free from exploitation, free from cheating, free from performance-enhancing drugs. But sports are big business for professional leagues, colleges, and universities, and where there's money, there's always someone trying to push the boundaries just a little bit further. Join us for a night of talks about the forces that are twisting our sports, pressuring our K-12 athletes, pushing our favorite athletes just a little too far, and leaving our less favorite athletes stuck on the bench for life.

Featured Talks

"A Curveball for the Ages: Racism and the Power of Sport" by Dr. Deborah Stroman, Adjunct Professor at the Gillings School of Global Public Health and Former Director of the Center for Sports Business at UNC-Chapel Hill

"The Role of Parents in Youth Athletic Development: Dos and Don'ts for the Gifted Athlete!" by Phil Ford, UNC basketball legend, former NBA player and coach

"The Corrupting Influence of Academics in Sports" by Dr. Jay Smith, Professor in the Department of History at UNC-Chapel Hill and co-author of Cheated: The UNC Scandal, the Education of Athletes, and the Future of Big-Time College Sports
